Player Interview
The
first of many, I hope, of player interviews for this small wee site.
The footballer being interviewed is Scott Brunton, who is
currently at Stonehouse Violet in the Central League District Division
2. He has a lot of history with many clubs, and he is a goalkeeper.
Q: An easy question to start with, what
team (Junior and/or senior) do you support?
Scott: Motherwell.
Q: Was there a footballer you considered
as a mentor when you were growing up, and just starting out in football?
Scott: Not really.
Q: You were offered a coaching role at East
Kilbride Thistle, but you've turned that down for a playing role
at another club, Stonehouse Violet. How hard was it to turn down
a role you thought didn't fulfill your needs at a club in which
you've had a great history with?
Scott: I've had a great time at EK,
but I have always said I would play for as long as I could. So I
was greatfull to John Brogan for offering me the coaching role but
I had to turn it down when I had the chance to continue playing.
I will be giving John a phone though when I do hang the gloves up.
Q: Your favourite match as a player?
Scott: It has to be, sorry to say the
EK v Clydebank match (he's sorry because I am a Clydebank fan),
after being on the wrong end of two 5-0 score lines (which
occured when Clydebank defeated Coltness, Scott's club at the time,
5-0 in two straight matches in season 2003/2004). It was good
to keep a clean sheet and the fact that it was my first match back
after being out with a seious injury.
Q: The worst moment in your career? (This
answer may be a long one!)
Scott: Ashfield 10 - Coltness 2, do
I need to say anymore. First and I hope the last time I lose ten
in one match.
Q: Who has been the best footballer you
have played with?
Scott: Colin Mitchell at East Kilbride.
He makes everything look so easy and always seems to have time on
the ball and that was him reachng the end of his career.
Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
Scott: Winning the First Division with
Lanark and being part of the East Kilbride team who lifted The Sectional
League Cup in 2002.
Q: Who have you played for, and which club
has given you the most fondest memories?
Scott: Started of with Royal Albert,
Lanark, Rutherglen Glencairn, East Kilbride (twice), Forth (twice),
Coltness and now with Stonehouse. I have memories from all the clubs,
getting my chance to move into the Juniors with Royal Albert, winning
the league with Lanark, helping to keep Coltness from folding, being
put in hospital after a training session at Forth and winning the
cup with East Kilbride. So all the clubs I have played for have
given me good memories and I hope I have a few more with Stonehouse.
Q: Would you like to see a pyramid system
in place for Scottish football, or are you happy with the current
system in place?
Scott: I think there should be a pyramid
system, as some of your top Junior teams could more than hold there
own in the 3rd division.
Q: Best manager you've played under?
Scott: Going to dodge this one.
Q: Is there a referee that you have a certain
dislike for, or are you a rare breed of footballer and get on fine
with all referees?
Scott: I normaly get on OK with most
referes, don't always agree with them but who does?
Q: What made you want to be a goalkeeper?
Was there not another position that didn't interest you as much
as goalkeeping?
Scott: I was a striker as a boy, had
a bit of pace and an eye for goal. Unfortunatly I played in the
worst Boys Brigade team in Motherwell, we only had about 3/4 guys
who played football. The rest were boys who just wanted a kick about
(Sorry guys). One day we lost a few goal in the first half of a
match and I decided to put the gloves on in the second half, saved
a penalty thought I'm OK at this and the rest is history.
Q: East Kilbride Thistle isn't the only
club you have fond memories with, you're also a popular figure at
Coltness. Sadly, they've been considered the whuppin' boys of the
West in the last few years. What would you consider to be a realistic
aim for Coltness in the coming seasons? (Personally, I hope they
don't finish bottom again - that'd be a good aim in itself I feel
for a team who's collected 4 league points in the space of two seasons)
Scott: I'm still in touch wih some of
the guys from Coltness and would love to see them get a few victories
this year (just not against Stonehouse), as you said not to finish
bottom would be agreat achievment.
Q: Finally, what has been your finest and
proudest moment as a player?
Scott: Probably winning the League title
with Lanark.
